Waters of March.

Waters of March.

And the river bank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the end of the strain
The joy in your heart

It was March... I had time on my hands and an impulse to travel.
Purchasing a cheap flight and packing my bicycle in a hurry, soon arriving in Taipei... my first visit.

Me being me, a self proclaimed bad tourist... a simple visit wouldn’t suffice. My plan to bikepack around the island came close, but I craved for something more.

It needed to be... I needed... a challenge.

The premise was to make a creative project out of the whole experience.

A particular type of project that frames the mindset and eye on a unified self motivated excuse to get out there, talk to people and take photographs.

Permission to be the best version of yourself... it worked, but not in the way I expected.

According to the guide-google-book, a typical round-island circuit takes 5-12 days... I had 10.

In those 10 days I completed approximately one-sixth of the total... waylaid by surfing, hiking and hospitality.

I couldn’t bring myself to hurry forward. Instead, resolving to slowly enjoy the company of the welcoming people I met literally every stop!

As for the project, I’ve held the feeling of not only failing to complete the island-loop but my creative challenge. Evidence of which, taking up space on my computer and consciousness for the past years... until now.

Renegotiating the story to myself... none of it was a failure. I succeeded in having one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life, fuelled by the smiles and generosity of the people I met.

Not to mention the food... memories linger... vegan dumplings, noodle soups and fried-things bought by total strangers as you sheltered shivering from the rain.

Today as March loops around once again... a new bike patiently waiting for warmer days... thoughts turn to travel + creativity.

I’ve rewritten the challenge to give space for success, no matter what. Reframing the experience of the journey as the success.

Where will the wheels take us? How far will they go? Will the challenge be completed? It doesn’t matter...

And the riverbank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the promise of life
It's the joy in your heart

Wish you were here.
